The CLEARTEST® HIV 1.2 Rapid Test is a rapid chromatographic immunoassay for the qualitative detection of antibodies to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1 and type 2 in human whole blood, serum or plasma to aid in the diagnosis of HIV infection. The test is intended for professional in vitro diagnostic use only.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with most cases observed in sub-Saharan Africa. Several types of viruses are grouped under the term HIV, including HIV type 1 (HIV-1) and HIV-2, with HIV-1 being more prevalent and pathogenic than HIV-2, and thus responsible for most of the global pandemic. The HIV virus is a retrovirus that is able to integrate a DNA copy of the viral genome into the DNA of the host cell.

The test works on the basis of latex conjugate and several recombinant HIV proteins and provides selective detection of antibodies against HIV 1.2.
